"The Story of Ms. Scooby-Doo"
A Special Raccoon With a Mother's Day Gift

This story is from volunteer Karen Inman.

On the evening of April 7, 2005, we received a call from a kind lady that
lived here in St. Augustine. They had found an adult raccoon laying in their
yard. The poor raccoon was unable to get up or even lift her head. She had
been hit by a car. When we arrived she was just laying there, so we gathered her up, put her into a large carrier and headed back to the center. After we got home with her, we took her out of the carrier and began to check her out to see what her injuries were. She had severe head trauma, her upper lip was torn in two places on either side of her nose, her left hind leg was broken, she also appeared to be blind and to top it all off she appeared to be pregnant. We had hoped that the blindness was only temporary because of her head injuries. She was kept in the large carrier because of the injury to her leg.

Weeks went by and she appeared to be recovering very well. Still no
babies, so on May 8, 2005, I just assumed that I was mistaken about her being pregnant. She had recovered from her injuries and even regained her sight back, so we decided to move her to a large cage in order for her to exercise her injured leg.

So, about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning we went out to move her, this was
also Mother's Day. When we got out to the carrier, we found her laying in
the corner of her carrier, cleaning a little tiny baby. We left her alone
thinking she would have more babies by the end of the day. To our surprise
there were no more babies. A few days later we were able to check the baby out and it was a little baby girl. She was already just as fat as she could be and doing very well with her mother.

The family that had called us about her to begin with, wanted to name
her Ms. Scooby-Doo, so we decided since the mother's name was Ms. Scooby-Doo, that we would name the baby Ms. Honey-Doo. Both mother and baby have done very well. Mother and baby were released on October 12, 2005 and we wish them both well.
