"Five Baby Raccoons"
AKA: Bellsouth Kits

This story is from Karen Inman.

This story is about 5 little orphaned raccoons that as far as they were concerned made a trip around the world! There is a plant here in St. Augustine that takes in used equipment from Bellsouth (a telephone provider). They repair a lot of equipment and send it back out. The equipment comes in from Georgia, the Carolinas, Louisiana, and places all over the state of Florida.

We received a call from one of the office workers saying that they had just received a shipment the night before and she was not sure which state it had come from. One of the workers heard a noise in one of the boxes and when he opened the box up he found 5 little raccoons in the box with no mother. The only thing that they could figure out was that mom had gone out to feed and the box was closed up and shipped to St. Augustine.

When I got there they had moved the box outside because it was cold in the plant and the lady was worried about them. The babies were in good condition and they were about 3½ weeks old. They were however very hungry. There were 4 little boys and 1 little girl and we decided to call them "The BellSouth Kits". I brought them back to the center, warmed them up, rehydrated them, and then gave them all bottles.

The have all had done very well. The little girl just wanted to suck on things. She had a stuffed rabbit in the cage and she would take him with her no matter where she was in the cage. If she got in the hammock she would drag him up there with her. If her brothers bothered her, then she would grab her rabbit and go to the bottom of the cage. She was always sucking on the rabbit’s tail. I decided to give her a nipple one-day just to see what she would do and the next thing I knew, here she was running around with this nipple in her mouth and still carrying her rabbit around. She would sleep on top of the rabbit while sucking on her nipple. She was so cute when you offered her a bottle you had to take the nipple away from her or she would take the nipple out of her mouth and hold it while she took her bottle.

My only problem was that it was almost time for them to go to the outside wilding cages and I wasn’t sure how to take the rabbit and nipple away from her but she and her brothers did well.
